Howdy

My name is Matt.  I'm an unprofessional tinkerer/maker/writer.  I plan to hit the road in a van that I have set up myself with my dog Charlie to explore and build.  I'm a college graduate who has held a wide variety of jobs, at last count 17 different careers over the course of my adult life including tax prepper, IT/sysadmin, cashier etc.  In ye old days hitting the road in a van was as common as a grungy poncho.  Maybe I'll make some wood art? Maybe I'll finish my book? Maybe I'll do some technomagic?

All About Me

I will primarily use this website to help me stay organized as well as inform folkses what I'm up to.  Hopefully this site will be filled with me making stuff, maybe some personal stuff and maybe some travel things.

Why am I hitting the road?

I believe that Christ calls us to be downwardly socially mobile, to get involved with people we would think beneath us, get rid of the false sense of dignity that we sprinkle around us, reconsider every person we meet regardless of financial means, social standing, location, culture everything.  Not only this but I feel that we are called to rely on God more - even if that means putting our hunger and money at his mercy.

These ideas are very counter cultural from the perspective of good standing Christians that I have talked to.  Telling my friends to become more dependent on God has mainly gotten me discounted or discredited - "you don't really mean that", "what would you know about that", "I disagree because something something being a good steward."  I'm tired of people not listening to me. I'm tired of people discrediting me for my crazy beliefs so the only option I have left is to show them what I mean.

God has not failed to take care of me, even in my most dire of circumstances.

Not that everyone needs to get into a van and hit the road.  But at the very least exercise God's ability to take care of them.

Also, hitting the road in the van isn't as unusual as everyone that has expressed trepidation about it to me would think.  It was only a few decades ago that taking a pilgrimage in a VW van to see a guru was very common.

Furthermore it also makes financial sense.  Van will be paid for and I won't have a mortgage.  I am going to use the opportunity to explore, be creative, wander a bit with my dog.  I'm pretty stoked.  Maybe I'll make the van fly (like literally, probably not a good contender for the Cannon Ball Run).
