Veins of vanity

Updated: Sep 25

I feel like I was pretty fortunate as a kid to have unruly hair. If I wanted my hair to look good for Sunday it required an inordinate amount of time to tame my mane. Without fail I would have a stubborn cowlick that stuck straight up. After some warm damp rag work I could get my cowlick to stick out to the side instead of up - a mild improvement. Eventually I got to the point where I didn't care. This has been an unusual gift to me.

Vanity is concern about appearances, or social posture. Synonymous with conceit. Let's raise the question: What is the return on investment for time spent to look good? I would argue that it isn't worth any time. Everyone has subjective concepts of what looks good, alternatively, there are some people who are turned off by people who spend too much time to look good. Alternatively there is some self-respect in keeping yourself presentable, but all the same to what end?

Some smart people I know have truly unruly hair, Einstein, Beethoven, John Herschel... I would love to make this list longer but... that's what I got. Point being, who even cares about looks. If you can impact the world in such a way that you are remembered, how your hair looks really isn't going to matter.

Furthermore, I personally consider spending time to leverage myself to look good - physically or socially - more or less a waste of time. If I look good socially, it will be by what I do or who I am. The kind of looking good that isn't shallow requires a renovation of this insides.

Project update

The shoes are done again. I took a cheese grater type of planer to the bottom of them so that they are flat. Hopefully I won't develop a limp from wearing them. I'll do what I can to make them good.

I've finished installing the battery disconnect inside the van. I was talking to someone else about installing a battery disconnect and they had the brilliant idea to use a relay. I wish I had thought of that.

It should work though. I am personally a little concerned about stringing lengths of hot wire up and around the inside of the console... Maybe I'll revisit this.
